My first visitor from the States is here right now and it’s so wonderful to see Morel! On Sunday we braved five buses to check out the nearby towns of Chordaleg, Gualaceo and Bulcay, known for their silver, markets, and orchids respectively. In Chordaleg we checked out the silver jewelry, didn’t buy anything, and then snacked on
llapingachos (potato pancakes) and coconut juice. We flagged down a bus to Gualaceo and couldn’t find the artisan market we read about so ate
hornado (bits of pork pulled off the roasted pig right in front of you) for lunch instead. We took another bus to a nearby orchid farm, had a tour of Ecuagenera (Ecuador's largest exporter of orchids), and then ate some
tortillas (patties made of corn or wheat) from a roadside stand in Bulcay. Here are some photos to illustrate.
