This year I am living in Cuenca, Ecuador on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship with the English Department at la Universidad de Cuenca. The photo at the top of the blog is of Cuenca, my new hometown, the third largest city in Ecuador, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its colonial architecture, and a former Incan center that is said to have once rivaled that of Cuzco. The blue domes of the Catedral Nueva famously accent the Cuencan skyline.
As a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) at the University of Cuenca, I work in the Language Department, teaching classes, giving presentations, leading conversation hours for professors and students, holding office hours and assisting in office projects. This is the second year that ETAs have come to Ecuador and the first year that an ETA has been placed in my university. As a result, all of us at the University of Cuenca are learning how to best utilize my efforts and my job description is constantly evolving.

I have found a perfect living situation, which is an even mix of private apartment and family home stay. My apartment is a separate addition to the house of the landlords, my new Ecuadorian family. I have my own entrance and come and go in my own space as I please but dine with Conchita and Alejandro next door. They have been extremely welcoming, like to take me along on errands on the weekends, and patiently converse with me in Spanish. We live about one half of a block from the university, making early morning and late night classes easy, and a 15-minute walk from the downtown centro historico of Cuenca.
